TWO brothers were found dead in the front garden of their remote farmhouse in Victoria's northwest this evening.
Douglas and John Streeter, both in their 60s, are thought to have been discovered by John's wife, who returned to their home about 5.30pm and called 000 for help.
They are believed to have suffered gunshot wounds to the head and chest.
Homicide detectives are investigating the incident, which has rocked the small farming community of Natte Yallock, 100km north of Ballarat.
A police source told the Herald Sun the double fatality was a possible murder-suicide.
Relative Alan Streeter said the family were unsure how the brothers had died.
Distraught family members briefly visited the grim scene and were said to be "inconsolable".
The deaths happened 1km along Streeters Lane, believed to be the home of John Streeter.
Douglas is thought to have lived in nearby Avoca, about 17km south of Natte Yallock.
The brothers were well known in the area, particularly for being breeders of merino wool.
Ambulance Victoria spokesman John Mullen said they were called out to an "extremely serious incident".
Detectives remained at the house, with the entire lane cordoned off.
