Firefighting helicopters leave Vic for US

HE played an encore show, but Elvis has left the building.

Victoria's two firefighting Skycrane helicopters, including one bearing the name of the late rock'n'roll legend, departed the state for their American home on Friday.

The choppers stayed in Victoria for longer than anticipated as dangerous fire conditions extended into March, with a record heatwave only finishing last week.

Federal Emergency Services Minister Mark Dreyfus said it had been a long and difficult fire season for Victoria, during which three of the state's firefighters had died on duty.

"Australia's emergency workers do a great job and we are all indebted to them," Mr Dreyfus told reporters in Melbourne on Friday.

The Department of Sustainability and Environment said the state's improved weather conditions would allow for fuel reduction burns to take place.
