NSW govt 'not serious' on climate: Greens

THE failure of NSW Environment Minister Robyn Parker to meet with the state's climate change panel for more than a year shows the government isn't serious about climate change, the Greens say.

The council, made up of top business, emergency services and science leaders, was set up to advise the government on its climate change policies.

But it says key studies have been delayed or shelved because of a "paralysis" afflicting the government, Fairfax reports.

The council has written to Ms Parker to get a response to its repeated pleas for a meeting in the wake of recent heatwaves and floods.

The letter also warns that current and future NSW governments "may find that extreme events exceed their capacity to respond effectively with serious economic, societal and political consequences".

Greens environment spokeswoman Cate Faehrmann says it raises questions about the NSW government's belief in climate change and commitment to a climate change action plan.

"It beggars belief that in 2013 we have an environment minister who doesn't take human induced climate change seriously, or worse, that she doesn't even believe in it," Ms Faehrmann said in a statement.

"The premier must come out today and reassure the people of NSW that his government supports the science of climate change."

Ms Parker told Fairfax she would start consulting with the council again.
