CONVICTED vandals will be forced to clean up graffiti across Western Australia as part of a court punishment, if a Liberal government is re-elected this weekend.
Premier Colin Barnett says adult and juvenile offenders will be forced to clean up graffiti damage under new laws.
Graffiti clean-up orders would be imposed by courts, forcing the offender to report to a Department of Corrective Services Officer and engage in graffiti removal as directed.
Failure to comply would result in the person being re-sentenced, potentially to a maximum of two years in jail.
"The best way to (deter graffiti vandals) is to force them to understand the time, effort and cost that goes into removing graffiti," Mr Barnett says.
More than $1.3 million a year will be allocated to the Department of Corrective Services to implement the graffiti clean-up orders.
The new laws would also include increased powers for the Public Transport Authority to ban graffiti offenders from public transport.
Later on Monday - the state's Labour Day public holiday - WA Labor are holding their election launch in Fremantle.
