FORMER AFL player Daniel Ward says gambling was like a drug that consumed his whole life as he urged other problem gamblers to seek help.

The former addict and Melbourne Demons player says he would go to bed swearing he wouldn't gamble, only to wake up and concoct new ways to get his hands on money.

"Money was my drug," he told AAP.

"It's just a never-ending circus going around in your head."

Mr Ward, who has been bet-free for over two years, is now part of a campaign by the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation, aimed at reducing problem gambling in the community.

The campaign, launched on Tuesday, will allow problem gamblers to sign up to the independent authority's 100-day challenge and receive support and counselling to control their gambling.

It will also feature problem gamblers recording their journey to overcome addiction in personal video diaries, shared on television ads and online.

Mr Ward says being part of the campaign is a form of therapy.

And he says it's important for problem gamblers, who often suffer guilt and shame, to know there is help out there.

"I know with my story I can't take back time, but hopefully we can get the message across to help other people," Mr Ward said.
