ACTOR Jim Carrey has angered the pro-gun lobby in the US after launching a Twitter tirade and comedy song.

He announced the song's debut via his Twitter feed: “Some ppl hate when i talk about guns so I decided to sing about it!”

Performing on comedy website Funny or Die, Carrey plays a singer named Lonesome Earl as well as late actor and former president of the National Rifle Association Charlton Heston. As Lonesome Earl, he is joined by his band the Clutterbusters, featuring Abraham Lincoln, Mahatma Ghandi and John Lennon; each of whom was assassinated by a gunman.

Carrey’s country and western style song is titled Cold Dead Hand; a reference to a speech made by Heston at an NRA convention, in which he declared the only way he would forfeit his gun would be if it were prised from his “cold dead hands”.

Carrey has also posted a series of tweets over the last few days in response to opposition being voiced to recommended changes to US gun laws following the school massacre at Sandy Hook, which killed 20 children.

In one tweet, promoting the song, he wrote: “'Cold Dead Hand' is abt u heartless m*********s unwilling 2 bend 4 the safety of our kids. Sorry if you're offended by the word safety!”

Carrey’s tweets were met with a flood of angry responses from pro-gun lobbyists, urging the Canadian actor to feel free to leave the US if he doesn’t like its laws.

“Thx 4 your input 2day,” Carrey replied. “I don't think i've ever felt so despised and so free at the same time.”
