Thousands protest outside NSW universities

THOUSANDS of students, teachers and administrative staff are set to rally outside Sydney universities, but organisers say they don't expect a repeat of Tuesday's clashes with police.

Hundreds of members of the National Union of Students (NUS) will gather outside UTS, in central Sydney, on Wednesday as part of a national campaign demanding the government does not increase or deregulate course fees or axe subjects from the syllabus.

Meanwhile, at the University of Sydney, thousands of members of the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) will continue a two-day strike, calling on management to address job security concerns and to implement internal committees to review staff performance, NTEU branch president Michael Thomson says.

After the rally at UTS, NUS members will join with other students and NTEU staff outside the University of Sydney.

Despite five protesters being arrested and reports police were spat at during the first day of demonstrations on Tuesday, neither the NUS nor NTEU is expecting any further trouble with the law.

NUS president Jade Tyrrell would not comment on the arrest of the protesters on Tuesday, but confirmed that NUS members would comply with police directions.

"We will encourage students to engage in positive protest," she told AAP.

Mr Thomson also said he wasn't expecting further confrontation between protesters and police.

The NUS protest would be staged in all state capitals on Wednesday, Ms Tyrrell said.
