Dawkins slaps down science cynic

SCIENTIST Richard Dawkins had some terse words for a "non-believer" who questioned the effectiveness of science at a conference in England.

A man in the audience at a talk at the Sheldonian Theatre in Oxford asked Dawkins how people could justify the scientific method.

"You both said and I think most agree we're justified in holding a belief if there's evidence for it or if we can find a logical argument that supports it, but it seems this in itself is a belief that requires some kind of evidence," the man said.

How do we justify it? "Because it works," Dawkins replied.

"It works. Planes fly. Cars drive, computers compute.

"If you base medicine on science you cure people. If you base design on planes they fly. If they base design of rockets on science they reach the moon.

"It works... bitches."

Needless to say Dawkins answer was met with a roaring applause.
