Internet troll Barker attacks a Today Tonight reporter

A NEW Zealand teenager dubbed an internet troll for his cutting postings on social media has pleaded guilty to assaulting an Australian television journalist.

Tristan Barker, 18, son of former Split Enz drummer Michael Barker, pleaded guilty to assaulting Seven Network's Today Tonight reporter David Eccleston.

The assault took place in Rotorua in March during an interview that focused on Barker's internet trolling, which took place when he was living in Australia.

A subdued-looking Barker, who appeared in Rotorua District Court on Wednesday, did not speak during his brief time before community magistrate Lesley Jensen with his lawyer, Bill Lawson, entering the plea on his behalf.

He asked for Barker to be remanded on bail to allow for a restorative justice conference to take place, to be facilitated by the Rotorua-based Mana Social Services.

This is to take place before June 19 when Barker is due to appear before a judge.

Barker was ordered to live at his parents' Haumurana home, a lakeside settlement on the outskirts of Rotorua, and was bailed on the condition he is not to associate with the victim other than during the restorative justice process.
